Jared Allen's monstrous year rushing the quarterback and Darren Sharper's penchant for returning interceptions for touchdowns have put those two defensive standouts in the national spotlight.
Allen, the Minnesota Vikings' defensive end, ranks second in the NFL with 10½ sacks — 7½ of which came in two games against the Green Bay Packers' porous pass protection unit.
Sharper, the New Orleans Saints safety, has returned three of his seven interceptions for touchdowns.
Well, he sacked the quarterback, he intercepted passes and he made big plays. -Dom Capers

The Packers' offensive line has had to deal with more than its share of injuries already this season, but the unit received some good news on Friday when starting center Scott Wells returned to the practice field.
Wells had missed Thursday's padded practice after reporting concussion symptoms following Wednesday's practice.

So far in 2009, the Green Bay Packers have managed to keep opposing tight ends from having a major impact on gameday.
But that task gets perhaps as difficult as it's been all season on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers and Vernon Davis.
Davis, a fourth-year athletic freak whose 6-foot-3, 250-pound listing doesn't do him justice, is a player that Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers calls not only the fastest tight end in the NFL, but maybe the fastest pass-catcher in the 49ers' offensive arse
You don't have to look at much tape to see that he's just such a major part of their offense -Dom Capers

Winning on the road has been a quandary the last year for the playoff-hopeful San Francisco 49ers.
That's exactly where they'll be in three of the next five weeks, however, starting with Sunday's tough bout against the Green Bay Packers at legendary Lambeau Field.
San Francisco has dropped three of four games away from the Bay this season, and is 3-8 in its last 11 road tilts dating back to September 28 of last year.
